Voronoi was a graduate of U St Petersburg in 1889, and gained his PhD there in 1896 (supervised by Markov). By that time he was on the faculty of U Warsaw, where he became Professor of Pure Mathematics and where he remained until his premature death. He is remembered by statisticians for his 1908 examination of the properties of the regions surrounding each of a finite set of points in many-dimensional space. In two dimensions these are now called Voronoi polygons.
