A NASA programme during the 1960s to reduce the weight of the Apollo lunar module. SWIP was created by Joseph Gavin, vice-president of the module project at Grumman Aerospace, which originally built the craft. The design changes included a reduction of the number of windows and removal of the astronauts' seats, with the crew strapped into standing positions. When the redesigned lunar module landed on the Moon, it weighed just over 14 850 kg.
