A NASA space station, launched on 1973 May 14. The converted upper stage of a Saturn V rocket, it consisted of living quarters, a work section, and the Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM) which contained six telescopes for observing the Sun’s chromosphere and corona at X-ray, ultraviolet, and visible wavelengths. Three crews, each of three astronauts, spent respectively 28 days, 59 days, and 84 days aboard the space station. Skylab was then abandoned, and re-entered in 1979 July; fragments of it fell in Western Australia.

Skylab contained a workshop for carrying out experiments in weightlessness, an observatory for monitoring the Sun, and cameras for photographing the Earth's surface.
Damaged during launch, it had to be repaired by the first crew of astronauts. Three crews, each of three astronauts, occupied Skylab for periods of up to 84 days, at that time a record duration for human space flight. Skylab finally fell to Earth on 11 July 1979, dropping debris on Western Australia.
