A leading light of the ‘second generation’ Kyoto school and pioneer in field of east-west philosophic dialogue. Nishitani’s own preoccupation was the nothingness lying at the base of the self, and the possibility of a religious response to the nihilism this would otherwise engender. His main work was Religion and Nothingness (1962).
