The temperature of a gas defined by the average velocity of its particles; the faster the particles move, the higher the temperature. In bodies in thermal equilibrium, the kinetic temperature will be the same as other measures of temperature, such as effective temperature. In other circumstances the various temperatures may have very different values. For example, in the solar corona the kinetic temperature of the electrons is 1 to 2 million K, while the effective temperature is about 100 K.
