An officer in the army of Alexander III (the Great). After the latter’s death (323), and that of the Macedonian regent, Antipater (319), he attempted to re‐establish Alexander’s empire under his own sole leadership, declaring himself king (306). His considerable success induced his rivals—Ptolemy, Seleucus, Cassander, and Lysimachus—to combine, defeat, and kill him at the ‘battle of the kings’ at Ipsus.
