A NASA principal facility for managing and implementing sub-orbital research programmes, and one of the world's oldest launching sites. Located on Wallops Island off the Virginia shore, it manages the Spartan 201 programme and University Class Explorer missions for low-cost experiments. It is also responsible for orbital tracking projects and small payloads for the space shuttle, such as the Getaway Special, and for payloads for sounding rocket and balloon programmes.
Established in 1945 by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, NASA's predecessor, Wallops Flight Facility and its 900 employees are now part of the Goddard Space Flight Center. The facility is open to industry for commercial launches and for space and aeronautics research.
