A Japanese Venus probe, also known as the Venus Climate Orbiter, launched in 2010 May. It went into near-equatorial orbit around Venus in 2015 December after a failed attempt at orbit insertion in 2010 December. Akatsuki observes the upper atmosphere and cloud tops of Venus with its Ultraviolet Imager (UVI) and Longwave Infrared Camera (LIR), while the 1-micron Camera (IR1) and the 2-micron Camera (IR2) plumb deeper levels. The spacecraft’s name means ‘dawn’ in Japanese, and it was referred to as Planet-C before launch.
