Hannibal. Hannibal marched north from Carthago Nova (Cartagena) into France in 218 bc and astounded the Romans by crossing the Alps with an army of troops and elephants and descending into Italy. The Alpine crossing, accomplished in a mere 15 days, is regarded as one of the greatest feats of ancient warfare. Despite several devastating victories over the Romans, Hannibal was not strong enough to attack Rome itself and his march on the city in 211 was merely a feint to divert the Romans from their siege of Capua. In 203 he was recalled to Carthago (Carthage). The Second Punic War ended in 201, following Hannibal’s defeat at Zama (202).

There he inflicted a series of defeats on the Romans (see cannae), campaigning for 16 years undefeated but failing to take Rome itself. After being recalled to Africa he was defeated at Zama by Scipio Africanus in 202.
