specializing in time series. Hannan left school aged fifteen to work in the Commercial Bank of Australia, before enlisting in the army through the Second World War. After the war, he took a BCom degree at U Melbourne and then resumed work in the bank where he calculated interest rates. During this period he taught himself mathematical statistics. A chance encounter with Moran led to an invitation to Hannan to study with Moran at ANU. After a period at Canberra U, Hannan returned to ANU in 1970 as Professor of Statistics. In 1979 he was awarded the Lyle Medal of the AAS. He was President of the SSAI in 1981 and was awarded its Pitman Medal (see Pitman) in 1986.
