of Roman Britain 78–84. He served with Paulinus against the Iceni queen Boudicca (61) and commanded the Twentieth Legion in the north‐west (70–73). As governor he subjugated the Ordovices of north Wales and extended the frontier north to the rivers Forth and Clyde, defeating the Caledonians in the process. His successes irritated Emperor Domitian who recalled him to Rome in 84. His career is described in his Life by Tacitus, his son‐in‐law.
