Systems in which the correlations between the particles are so strong that such systems cannot be described adequately by single-particle approximations, such as Hartree–Fock theory. Examples of strongly correlated systems include materials with narrow energy bands with transition metal atoms and materials in which high-temperature superconductivity can occur. It is not easy to find approximation techniques to describe strongly correlated systems.
