释义
Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration

Astronomy
  • A NASA satellite launched into high polar orbit in 2000 March to study how the Earth’s magnetosphere reacts to changes in the solar wind. It carried instruments to image neutral atoms, ultraviolet emissions, and plasma motions. It ceased operation in 2005 December.

Space Exploration
  • A NASA satellite, launched on 25 March 2000, which orbits over the Earth's poles to examine how the Earth's magnetosphere responds to changes in the solar wind. IMAGE employs a variety of techniques to produce global images of plasma in the inner magnetosphere. Three neutral atom imagers (NAI) provide images at energies from 10 eV to 200 keV while two ultraviolet imagers cover wavelength ranges from 120 to 180 nm (FUV) and 30.4 nm (EUV), and a radio plasma imager (RPI) transmits and receives pulses from 3 kHz to 3 MHz to determine relative motions of the satellite and plasma. The satellite ceased operations in January 2006. Its pioneering cameras produced nearly six years of imagery that has revolutionized our understanding of geospace and our knowledge of its space weather. Among the craft’s many discoveries were showing us that space around the Earth is anything but empty and that plasma clouds can be imaged and tracked just as we do from space for Earth's surface weather.
