A laminated, mounded structure, built up over long periods of time by successive layers or mats of cyanobacteria that trapped sedimentary material. Stromatolites are found in shallow marine waters in warmer regions. Some are still in the process of being formed, e.g. those in Shark Bay, Western Australia; fossil stromatolites dating from the Early Precambrian are also known, although it is not certain that these were formed by cyanobacteria.
