A method used to keep electrically charged particles in the beam of an accelerator from drifting apart. It involves using feedback from the currents generated by the motions of the particles. Stochastic cooling was invented at CERN by Simon van der Meer (1925–2011) and was a key feature of the experiments that discovered the W boson and the Z boson.
