单词 Paul Wild Observatory
释义
Paul Wild Observatory

Astronomy
  • A radio observatory at Culgoora, near the town of Narrabri in New South Wales, Australia. It is the site of the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), part of the Australia Telescope National Facility, and consists of a line of six 22-m antennas that can operate as one instrument by aperture synthesis. Five of these antennas can be moved along a 3-km stretch of rail track running east–west, with a 200-m north–south spur added in 1998. A sixth antenna lies 3 km to the west of the main group, on its own short track. The array began operation in 1988. The observatory is named after the English-born Australian radio astronomer (John) Paul Wild (1923–2008). Also at the observatory is the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer (SUSI), an optical interferometer with baselines up to 160  m; the Culgoora Solar Observatory; and a station of the Birmingham Solar Oscillations Network (BiSON).
