The first space mission to acquire wind profiles for our entire planet, including remote areas lacking ground-based weather stations. The mission uses a 1 450-kg satellite equipped with a telescope designed to further our knowledge of Earth’s atmosphere and weather systems. Launched in 2008 aboard a Vega rocket, the Aeolus satellite carries a state-of-the-art precision pointing system that directs a highly sophisticated Doppler wind lidar instrument called Aladin. The craft orbits in a Sun-synchronous, dusk/dawn orbit, 408 km above to generate about 100 wind profiles an hour, which will give meteorologists better information with which to predict the weather.
