A retrieving device used by NASA space shuttle astronauts during an extravehicular activity to recover a satellite in need of maintenance work or repairs. The astronaut floats out with the stinger and inserts it into the satellite's rocket nozzle, then releases a lever to expand toggle fingers that engage the satellite. The stinger is then shortened with a crank until its ring presses tightly against the satellite. An astronaut in the shuttle manoeuvres the craft's robotic Canadarm until it attaches to a grappling pin on the stinger and brings the satellite to the shuttle for the necessary work.
