The study of the physical properties of solids, with special emphasis on the electrical properties of semiconducting materials in relation to their electronic structure. Solid-state devices are electronic components consisting entirely of solids (e.g. semiconductors, transistors, etc.) without heating elements, as in thermionic valves.

Recently the term condensed-matter physics has been introduced to include the study of crystalline solids, amorphous solids, and liquids.
