A hypothetical point-like defect in the fabric of spacetime, produced in some models of the early Universe. They are so named because they would behave like the isolated north or south pole of a magnet. A magnetic monopole is the one-dimensional analogue of the cosmic string, domain wall, and cosmic texture. Monopoles, as well as the other types of defect, are a consequence of some forms of grand unified theory (GUT). No monopoles have yet been detected.
