A process in plasmas in which magnetic energy is converted into thermal energy and kinetic energy of the particles that make up the plasma. It is associated with a change in the topology of the magnetic field lines. Magnetic reconnection in the magnetosphere of the earth is a mechanism that can give rise to aurora. It has also been suggested that magnetic reconnection gives rise to dramatic solar activity, with large amounts of matter being ejected from the sun. In addition, magnetic reconnection is one of the difficulties that arise in containing nuclear fusion in a Tokamak. It is a considerable challenge to magnetohydrodynamics to give a quantitative theory of magnetic reconnection that explains why the process occurs as rapidly as it does.
