During the early Holocene, atmospheric methane (CH4) concentrations gradually decreased and then reversed direction around 5000 years ago. This latter is the late Holocene methane anomaly; see Singarayer et al. (2011) Nature, 470, 82 for the orbital explanation, and Zhou (2012) Holocene 22, 731, who ascribes it to the expansion of early rice paddy fields.
