A dynamo that produces a magnetic field around itself whereby motions of an electrical conductor, carrying magnetic lines of force, generates further current, eventually resulting in a stable external magnetic field. It is generally considered that the geomagnetic field is produced by two self-exciting dynamos, the interaction of which results in reversals of geomagnetic polarity.
