An international program that operated from 1976 to 1978 to study the Earth’s magnetosphere using of a number of satellites—launched by the European Space Agency, Japan, the USA, and the USSR—and coordinated ground-based balloon and rocket investigations. Its chief purpose was to obtain a more comprehensive and quantitative understanding of the dynamical processes operating on plasmas in Earth’s geomagnetic field, especially during auroral storms.
