A subspecies of the North American brown bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) that occurs in Alaska, the north-western USA, and western Canada. It is a large bear, males weighing up to 360 kg, females half that. It is omnivorous, meat and fish forming a substantial part of its diet, and also scavenges for carrion. Despite its reputation, it avoids people and is aggressive only if surprised or if it has food or young to defend.
