A hormone that is produced by the hypothalamus and stimulates the release of a hormone from the anterior pituitary gland into the bloodstream. Each hormone has a specific releasing hormone; for example, thyrotrophin-releasing hormone stimulates the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone.
