An instrument that measures the gradient of some measurable quantity. A magnetic gradiometer uses two magnetometers a fixed distance apart to measure rate of change of magnetic flux. They are typically used in surveying, to locate objects buried under soil by detecting small changes in the earth’s magnetic field due to those objects’ differing magnetic properties.
