A squash-like fruit that has a hard shell, or a plant that bears such a fruit. Most gourd-bearing plants belong to the cucumber family (Cucurbitaceae), especially Lagenaria (e.g. calabash or bottle gourd, L. siceraria) and Cucurbita species.
