An antelope (family Bovidae) in which the front part of the body is markedly heavier than the hindquarters. It has a broad muzzle, shaggy mane, and curved horns. Gnus inhabit savannah grasslands and open woodlands in sub-Saharan Africa. Some are nomadic, but others undertake seasonal migrations. There are two species: white-tailed gnu or black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou), and brindled gnu or blue wildebeest (C. taurinus).
