  • An effect in which a temperature gradient along an electric conductor or semiconductor placed in a perpendicular magnetic field, causes a potential difference to develop in the third perpendicular direction between opposite edges of the conductor. This effect, an analogue of the Hall effect, was discovered in 1886 by the German physicist Walter Nernst (1864–1941).

  • If a conductor or semiconductor is placed in a magnetic flux density and a temperature gradient maintained across it at right angles to the magnetic flux density, an e.m.f. is developed in the material orthogonal to both the magnetic flux density and the temperature gradient. This is the converse of the Ettinghausen effect and is related to the Righi–Leduc effect.
