The study of the economic, technological, social, and political consequences of the pervasive and accelerating culture of the car. The analysis of automobility extends beyond congestion, commuting, suburbanization, and environmental impacts to consider also the role of driving in cultural identity formation, social standing, and status; it shows that the automobile is more than just a technological object, it is in a very real sense ‘a whole way of life’ (A. Latham et al. 2008).
