A small to medium-sized, omnivorous dog belonging to one of about 24 species in six genera (family Canidae) that has upright ears and a bushy tail and that occurs worldwide, except for Antarctica. Vulpes comprises 12 species including the red (V. vulpes), Arctic (V. lagopus), and fennec fox (V. zerda). The other genera are Canis (Ethiopian wolf), Cerdocyon (crab-eating fox), Lycalopex (six South American species), Otocyon (bat-eared fox), and Urocyon (three North American species).
