Any chemical that is used in the fusing of two cells or protoplasts (see cell fusion). Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is used in the formation of hybridomas, and sodium nitrate in the fusion of plant protoplasts in solution. Naturally occurring fusogens are glycoproteins.
