Science and Technology
  • A hard, glass-like variety of silica (silicon dioxide, SiO2) that is deposited in the burrows and inside the bodies of sponges, echinoderms, and other marine invertebrates, and that is most often found in the form of nodules enclosed in chalk. Flint can be fractured (knapped) to produce sharp edges, once exploited to make tools and weapons.
