A stage in the European Early Cretaceous epoch (140.2–136.4 Ma ago, Int. Commission on Stratigraphy, 2004), preceded by the Berriasian and followed by the Hauterivian, for which the type locality is at Valangin, Switzerland. See also neocomian.
