A weak atmospheric cell lying between the Polar cell and the Hadley cell, and travelling in the direction opposite to that of the Hadley cell. It transfers warm air to high latitudes and shifts cold air back to the subtropics, where it is warmed. The Ferrel cell is a consequence of the stationary and transient eddy circulations in the mid-latitudes. See Salustri and Stone (1983) J. Atmos. Scis 40, 5.
