An edible, almost spherical squash, yellow or orange when ripe, with a smooth, ribbed surface that is native to North America but grown widely elsewhere. Most pumpkins are fruits of Cucurbita pepo (family Cucurbitaceae), which has been cultivated for many centuries and of which there are many varieties. Other Cucurbita species also yield fruits called pumpkins.
