A change in the dimensions of a body under the influence of an electric field in a medium of relative permittivity different from its own. Forces of extension or compression may be produced. In a nonhomogeneous field the body will also tend to move: one of higher relative permittivity than its surroundings tends to move into the region of higher field strength and vice versa.
