A stereographic projection, used in the analysis of the orientation of folds, in which poles (points representing lines) perpendicular to folded bedding (π‎ poles) are plotted, and the diagram rotated on an overlay to achieve a best-fit great circle (a π‎ circle). A pole to the plane of the π‎ circle plane records the plunge and trend of the fold axis.
