known for his application of wavelets to image processing. He obtained his AB at Princeton U (where he was supervised by Tukey) and his PhD at Harvard U (supervised by Huber). After joining the UCB faculty in 1984 he joined the faculty at Stanford U in 1990. He was the 1997 IMS Wald Lecturer and the 2003 IMS Le Cam Lecturer. He has been elected to the NAS and AAAS and was awarded the 2013 Shaw Prize for Mathematics (worth $1 million) ‘for his profound contributions to modern mathematical statistics’. He won the 2016 Wilks Award
