A type of valve used to control the flow of a fluid in a pipe. It consists of a sphere with a hole through it. When the ball is rotated by 90°, the hole is perpendicular to the pipe axis and the valve is shut preventing flow. With a comparatively low pressure drop, its action is fast and is suitable for dirty and viscous fluids. It is also capable of tight shut-off.
