The edible fruit (a berry) of certain trees of the genus Diospyros (family Ebenaceae). There are more than 700 species of Diospyros, found throughout the tropics with a few in temperate regions, of which seven bear edible fruit. Asian persimmon (D. kaki) is the species most widely cultivated.
