The metaphysical principle primarily championed by Graham Priest (1948– ) according to which there exist true contradictions or, equivalently, there exists some proposition that is true along with its negation. To embrace a dialethic position bears on logical practice; one can either accept the principle of explosion, in which case dialetheism entails trivialism, i.e., the thesis that all propositions are true, or reject the principle, in which case one will accept a paraconsistent logic. Dialetheism has been offered as a solution to paradoxes such as the Liar, problems of vagueness (cf. subvaluation), and other prima facie paradoxical or inconsistent phenomena.
