Named after the American paediatrician Virginia Apgar, this is a simple ten-point scale for assessing a baby's health. For each of heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone, response to stimulation by a catheter in the nostril, and skin colour, the baby is given 0, 1, or 2 points. An overall score of ten suggests a bonny bouncing baby.
