The ratio of the aperture (diameter) of a lens or mirror to its focal length, usually expressed as a true ratio, e.g. 1 : 8. It is more common, however, to refer to the focal ratio, which is the inverse of the aperture ratio and is expressed in the form f/8 (see f/Number).
