brownfield 1. In the building industry, referring to a parcel of land previously built upon and, especially, polluted. 2. In telecommunications, referring to network deployments in territories where there is an existing telecommunications infrastructure that is removed or abandoned in place. For example a passive optical network (PON) fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) configuration may require the removal or involve the abandonment of existing wireline infrastructure.
