Baudot, Emile (1845–1903) Best known as the inventor of the teletypewriter, or teletype, an auto- matic printing telegraph machine that used a typewriter-style keyboard rather than a telegraph key. As the dot-and-dash Morse code system was not highly compatible with this automated approach, he invented and patented (1874) a five-bit coding scheme that became known as Baudot code.
