serial line protocol A protocol that provides for communications over serial or dial-up links. Examples include High-level Data Link Control (HDLC), as specified in ISO 3309, Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP), as specified in IETF RFC 1055, and Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), as specified in RFCs 1548, 1661 and 1662.
