UTC (Universal Coordinated Time) Also known as Zulu (Z) Time. The International Telecommu- nications Union (ITU) struggled to develop an initialization for a universal time coordinated among all nations of the Earth. English speakers preferred CUT (Coordinated Universal Time). French speakers preferred TUC (Temps Universel Coordonné). So, the ITU managed to reach a consensus that totally satisfied neither group, but resolved the stalemate. UTC is based on the average of multiple atomic clocks, many of which are cesium clocks, which are the standard on which the SI second is based. UTC sometimes is referred to as GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), which is archaic. See also ITU, second, SI, and Zulu Time. |
