CAP 1. Competitive Access Provider. Also known as alternative access vendor (AAV). A company that provides access circuits between an end user enterprise and an interexchange carrier (IXC), or long distance carrier, in competition with the incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC). A CAP is facilities-based and generally offers access services at attractive rates compared to those of the ILEC. See also carrier, ILEC, and IXC. 2. Carrierless Amplitude Phase. A non-standard variation of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), CAP was the early de facto standard modulation technique for asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) modems. CAP was replaced by discrete multitone (DMT) prior to the release of ADSL standards recommendations by the ITU-T. See also ADSL, DMT, ITU-T, modulation, QAM, and standard. |
